Acesulfame-K

Acesulfame Potassium (pronounced AY-see-SUL-faym), also referred to as acesulfame K (with K representing potassium) or Ace K, stands as a calorie-free sugar substitute, commonly found in the market under the trade names Sunett and Sweet One. Within the European Union, it is identified by the additive code E950. The accidental discovery of acesulfame potassium dates back to 1967 when German chemist Karl Clauss stumbled upon it at Hoechst AG, now known as Nutrinova. Its chemical structure reveals acesulfame potassium as the potassium salt of 6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide. This white crystalline powder boasts a molecular formula of C4H4KNO4S and a molecular weight of 201.24 g/mol.
